The Definition of Happiness – Riding the wave of happiness

Sailing across the world

In dutch we have the saying: huisje, boompje beestje, literally: house, tree and a pet. This saying basically means leading a nice and quiet conventional family life. For some of us, leading a nice and quiet conventional family life defines happiness, but this doesn’t go for everybody. The other day we met up with Gi and Lien who live on a boat. With their 42 ft catamaran called Lazuli, they sail across the world. Gi and Lien are probably the happiest people we’ve met so far.

One big change and no financial planLazuli2

Around four years ago Gi made a radical decision in his life. After working for an insurance company for years he decided it was time for a change. He sold his house and bought a boat because he felt that what he really wanted to do is to sail across the world. Not long after that, he met the love of his life. They knew from the start that their love was meant to be.

Gi made a decision with no financial plan or whatsoever. He just followed his heart and Lien followed with it. You might be asking yourself: how in the world can people make a living out of this? Well… Gi has a passion for sailing, and both Gi and Lien love meeting new people so the idea of taking people with them on the boat to experience the world from a different angle came all natural. A funny fact is that Lien never sailed before she started the whole adventure. But she decided to go for it and since that moment there hasn’t been a day of regret.

“Happiness is like a wave”

Lazuli Sailing - definition of happinessBesides the actual journey on the boat, Gi and Lien also like to take their passengers on a spiritual journey. As soon as you come on board you can feel an
atmosphere that is very welcoming and open. Even while recording the interview it was something we could notice. When we asked Gi about his definition of happiness he replied: “Happiness is like a wave, and I’m on top of it.”
